Why choose acupuncture?
It is painless, relaxing and tackles ill health in a different way to conventional medicine. Using very fine needles inserted at special points across the body acupuncture adjusts the patterns of energy or qi flow to promote a return to good health. It has been shown to increase endorphin release, regulate hormones and calm the nervous system.
Although it has been used used in the East for thousands of years it has only recently begun to be popular in the West but an increasing body of evidence is forming and it is now accepted as an effective treatment for a range of conditions. As a whole person therapy it looks for the underlying causes of ill health and rectifies those as well as addressing symptoms meaning you may sleep better, have better digestions or feel less anxious.
Research in the British Medical Journal publication Acupuncture in Medicine has in the last year alone reported trials that show the usefulness of acupuncture in treating menopausal symptoms, reducing crying in babies with colic, pregnancy outcomes following IVF when infertility is idiopathic, sleep apnoea and facial paralysis.

Conventional medicine recognises it for chronic back pain, pain and discomfort during gastrointestinal endoscopy, headache, pain and discomfort during oocyte retrieval (a procedure used during IVF).The BAcC issued a series of fact sheets about the uses of acupuncture which include anxiety, dementia, infertility, hypertension, menopause, migraine, neuropathic pain, stroke and sports injury
The World Health Organisation also issued a document summarising the uses of acupuncture which can be found here and discusses the evidence for many disorders including pain, headaches, strokes, Bell's palsy, insomnia, prostatitis, renal colic, urinary retention, dysmehoorhoea, PMS and hypertension.
In China acupuncture is used for a wide range of problems treating them as in or outpatients in hospitals dedicated to traditional and conventional medicine. Acupuncture is highly respected in many western countries around the world.
